Everyone knows that “content is king” and i can’t deny that, however if no one is reading your content than who’s the king?

Did you know that when people visit your blog, their attention span is VERY low. If you have one wrong thing about your blog whether it be a wrong color, an out of place ad, or a weird design, that reader will leave in a heart beat. So if you don’t captivate a reader in under 10 seconds you probably will loose that reader for good.

Well the good thing is that you’re posts are filled with amazing content, however there’s no way a reader could read the whole thing in just 10 seconds. If only there was some kind of bridge, a way to captivate your reader before even touching the main content…… Well luckily there is…..

You must craft a flawless, compelling, sexy headline…. every time

And trust me, this task can be quite challenging. I struggled for a while until i learned a few solid tricks that put my headlines over the top.

So here is my “Idiots Guide to Crafting Genius Headlines”

Use “shock effect” and be bizzare

One of the easiest ways to grab someone’s attention is to do something outrageous. Just look at all of the celebrities on tv. Whenever one of them makes a fool of themself it makes front page news because its interesting.   (here are some examples)

Use Curiosity and Challenge existing dogma

If people are curious about the article than obviously they are going to open it up and read it. If you can learn how to tie this into your niche it can be very compelling. Also challenging exisiting dogma is an AMAZING way to get readers. It just makes sense that if someone tells you that what you are doing is wrong, you’re going to want to find out why.

The “How To” article

This is one of the best ways to get subscribers and search engine rankings. It’s human nature to want to become better at anything, so writing an article on how to do something is a definite way to capture someone’s attention. Just make sure you don’t write too many of these. Some new bloggers tend to focus on these too much.

• 10 ways to get more blog traffic
• The secret to getting more twitter followers

Use Contrast

Did you know that the way people learn is by noticing what things are not. If you notice something new you might not be able to say what it is, but you sure can say what its not. This works the same for looking at text. The easiest thing to read is black on white because it is very contrasting. Using these types of headlines can be very clear and precise which is a big part of captivating someone.

Play on movie/book quotes, titles, and other popular media.

This is my absolute favorite one to write and probably the most advanced. If you use this method make sure you actually relate that topic to your post. When done correctly this method can generate LOTS of comments and retweets.

I mean, probably one of the most famous movie quotes ever happens when Auric Goldfinger straps Bond down to a table and points a slow moving laser towards him. When Bond says “do you expect me to talk” Goldfinger says “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die”.

If you don’t know what i’m talking about than you probably need to get out more. But anyways, did you know that James Bond can actually teach you a lot about blogging?

So, Here Are The 4 Things That Bond Can Teach You About Blogging

Keeping a clear and obvious goal

Even though Auric Goldfinger was an evil protagonist he had a clear and obvious goal – raid Fort Knox and obliterate the world economy. I mean what’s so bad about that.. right?

Anyways the point is, having a clear and obvious goal is a very important part of blogging. I see so many bloggers open a blog on a specific niche and start jumping from topic to topic. Doing This can really turn readers off and totally buzz kill your blog. This is a quick and easy way to loose subscribers and traffic for good.

You Need to Have Attractive, Agressive charm.

James bond is the epitome of charm. It doesn’t matter if the girl is good, evil, attractive, mysterious, shy, whatever… She will fall for bond.

Well using this type of strategy is important to your blogging in 2 main respects. The first and foremost is you need to have sexy, attractive content. If you’re not writing compelling blog posts all the time than people are not going to read your posts, become a subscriber, or ever come back to your blog.

Secondly you need to have some at least decent blog design. If bond was an unattractive man without a charming british accent would he get all of those girls? – o’ve course not.

Blog Design DOES matter!

Using Kick Ass Gadgets.

One of the reasons that we love Bond movies in general is all the awesome gadgets. I mean if i had a nickel for every time i could have used an invisible car with rockets on the back, or an industrial sized laser used to open up the most well guarded safe in the world, i wouldn’t have to spend my time blogging. haha

Ok so maybe we don’t have access to some of these bond gadgets, however we do have access to many awesome wordpress features and plugins. Using tools like “wordpress stats” to check who’s coming to your website, “tweetmeme” to get your content syndicated, and an autoresponder to build up your email list. In my opinion these gadgets might actually be cooler.

(alright, maybe not.)

Even Bond Can’t Do it Alone

Although James Bond does most of his work by himself he can’t do it ALL by himself. Even Bond has “m” to keep him on the right course and Q to deck him out with all of the cool gadgets.

You shouldn’t be trying to build your blog by yourself. Make sure you are frequently visiting other well established blogs in your niche and learning from them. Make sure you’re constantly leaving comments on other peoples post to get more exposure and to ask questions. Make sure you’re asking other bloggers what they’re doing, and make sure your constantly informing yourself on new strategies ( by reading training courses, e-books, and actual books).

So when your creating your next post, doing some blog design, or setting up some new plugins. Remember, Do what James Bond would do – and kick some ass.

Ok,  so in the last post i showed you how you how to start your own blog. If you haven’t yet read that post make sure you go and read that now.

How To Start A Blog in No Time Flat. Part 1

However in the last post i didn’t show you all of the cool plugins, design features, and other things that really make a blog….. a blog. So i’m going to take you into the back office of MattAdamo.Net and show you all of the stuff that i use to pimp it out.

Let’s first start off by explaining what a plugin is.

Since i host my own blog i have the freedom to do literally anything i want with it. The cool thing about wordpress is that it’s open source which means programmers can design little bits of code and scripts which can do cool things on their blogs. Then the programmers can upload these “plugins” as they’re called to wordpress.org where all wordpress members can use them.

(this is how easy it is for wordpress users to find and navigate to any specific plugin)

Notice #1 is an easy option selection. You can choose how you want to add plugins to your blog. Search for other plugins, upload your own, or see what’s new/popular.

Notice #2 is a search bar that searches by relevancy and keyword. It is extremely useful and very simple to use.

Plugins can do literally anything, from tracking your visitors, to showing your twitter account, to adding and opt in form on your page. While it is completely up to you to mess around with all types of plugins and see what suits your blog and what doesn’t, there are a few of them that are almost a necessity to any wordpress blog.

So these are some plugins that if you don’t already have installed i would go out and get them!

Plugin #1 – All in one Seo pack

The first one is called The All in One Seo Pack. This is probably my 100% most favorite plugin for how valuable it is. As you may or may not know, Seo rankings (how to rank on google, yahoo, ect) are very important these days as they are a huge determining factor as to how much traffic you get. Well this plugin makes your seo tasks way easier. The blog allows you to easily add a headline, add tags, and write a small description of the article without having to know code. The best part is that so many people don’t do simple seo tasks like this and having this small advantage can really make a difference in the long run. (this is what the interface of the plugin looks like)

Plugin #2 – OnlyWire for Wordpress

The onlywire plugin is the best plugin i have ever found for content syndication. Content syndication is just basically a term that means (get your content to as many places with the smallest amount of work). Onlywire which is a paid service is FREE if you have a wordpress blog which is amazing in my opinion. Basically it submits your post, video, or what ever other type of content you have to all of the major social bookmarking sites (digg, mixx, delicious, ect.). With one click of a button you can get over 30 pieces of content floating around the internet which means better searching engine results, more traffic, and more overall exposure. This is what the onlywire button looks like….

Plugin #3 – Sexy Bookmarks

Sexy bookmarks is another great way to syndication your content. You see most people don’t have an onlywire account however they do have accounts individually on each of the social bookmarking websites. So Sexy bookmarks allows readers to bookmark content individually. It’s also sick that it looks badass. This is what the SexyBookmarks plugin looks like, (also realize that it is a dropdown box)

Plugin #4 – Wickett Twitter Widget

This widget is the best twitter widget i have ever found. Lot’s of people have made twitter widgets however this one allows you to fully customize the colors of every aspect and shows it in a really nice interface. It also easily allows readers to find you on twitter and connect to you. This is what the Wickett Twitter Widget looks like.

Plugin #5 – TweetMeMe

TweetMeMe is another twitter plugin that easily allows blog followers to retweet content that they like. This is one of the absolute best plugins for making your content go viral. Not only that, but TweetMeMe will track every person who retweets your content. Pretty cool eh? This is what the tweet MeMe widget looks like….

Plugin #6 – WassUp or Wordpress Stats

These two plugins allow you to see how much traffic you are getting, where that traffic is coming from, if the google bots are coming to your website, who’s currently on your blog, and they do it all in a nice and easy interface. It gives you a graph to chart how visitors come and then it gives you a live log of EVERY SINGLE person that visits your blog. How cool is that! If you are going to be serious about blogging you need to be monitoring your traffic and other aspects of your blog to see what works and what doesn’t. So those are all of the widgets that i would recommend that you implement right away. Obviously i am using more widgets than this, however it’s important that you go out and find what widgets work best for you and your blog. However the next feature to building a blog is blog design.

This is how i do my blog design

The first step to blog design and the most important is picking a theme that looks nice. Obviously any theme can be edited to look any way you want, however the core components of the theme should be the basics of what YOU want in your blog. So the first part of having a sick blog design is picking a sick theme. In part one i recommended a few different ones that i love and use. Make sure you go and check those out.

However customizing the theme you have is a different process. As you can probably already tell i have a custom header on MattAdamo.Net which i think looks pretty sick. However i know absolutely NOTHING about web design. I actually outsourced the work to someone else and had it done for about 35$. In fact i probably could of had it done cheaper if  i new how to edit code, but i don’t know any of that so my designer did it all for me.

I highly recommend outsourcing as a way of getting things done on your blog. Your going to want to go over to either

Create a project and wait as programmers bid on it. Then you can choose from a whole bunch of people who have lots of experience in the field at all different bid prices. You can pick who is most qualified, who has the best profile, who is offering the lowest price, or a combination of the bunch. The best part is that if i had to learn how to edit code and learn graphic design it could cost me way more than 35$ in my time and most likely money also. haha. And lastly it’s an amazing strategy because the demand is SOO high for freelance projects. (meaning there are a lot more programmers than there are jobs). So you can get your job done for a fraction of the real valued price.

Hey guys, at this point i’m sure you realize the importance to owning your own blog. Besides the fact that it’s one of the most fun things in the world to do ( i mean where else can you talk about anything you want and have a huge group of people want to listen) BUT you can make some serious money from it.

Well, even with this said, so many people just don’t start thier own blog. They say things like “ohh i don’t have time” or “i could never make any money with blogging”, Well you’re 100% right with that attitude. So once and for all, i have created this post to show everyone how rediculously simple it is to start your own blog.

So grab a cup of coffee, sit down for 5 minuets, and lets get started!

Choose Your Niche

Before ANYTHING tech related you need to figure out what you want to actually blog about. Choosing your niche is something that is SOO important to blogging as it is the foundation to everything you will be blogging about. Personally, i am in the “Blogging and Internet Marketing” Niche however you could blog about literally anything. I know people who make a full time income blogging about woodworking and birds.

It’s important that you pick something that you are passionate about. If you actually like what you’re writing about than it will make blogging fun which is one of the overall goals we are trying to achieve in our online money making quest. Secondly if you have passion for that topic than writing about it will come very easy because you will probably know a lot about it or you will be interested in doing research about it.

However, Make sure that you pick something that is also profitable. If you pick some super obscure niche that only 5 people in the whole world are interested in than you’re probably not going to make much money off of that blog. Which totally defeats another goal of what we are trying to achieve on our blogs. A general rule is that if a topic has a magazine about it, than it has enough fans to start a blog on it. So to sum it up,

Find a balance of something you have passion for and has a large enough audience to monetize

The first thing you need to decide for yourself is whether you want to have a self hosted blog (which i have) or have another site host it (for free) . Personally i host my own blog (and in total i only pay 5$ a month for the actual hosting, 10$ a year for the domain, and i paid 125$ in total for the design and template). However you don’t have to pay for templates, if you google “wordpress templates” hundreds of sites will pop up with free stuff (and some really good ones at that). I will recommend some free ones at the end that are super high quality.

While opening up a free blog may be easy, if you actually want to start bloggin seriously so that you can generate money from it, I would HIGHLY reccomend you host it yourself. If you get your own hosting account and domain name you get to write on YOUR OWN website. And remember, you’re not just building a blog, your building a business. Make sure you take care of your assets and don’t half ass them.

“We can blog it”! It’s what Rosie has been saying for years…. haha

For example my blog is “MattAdamo.Net”, but if i used a free service such as blogger it would be “www.mattadamo.blogspot.com” While its not awful, it looks less professional. Another key advantage to self hosting is that no one can take down your own blog. You can write about anything you want and put any type of widgets and custom graphics on it you want. However with a free blog, at any time blogger can rip your blog down, with all of your hard earned work and rankings.

But if you do choose to use a free blog, you’re going to want to head over to
http://www.blogger.com or
http://www.wordpress.com

Setting up a free blog is very simple and those sites will walk you through it very simply. So i am going to skip that and show you how to set up your own self hosted blog.

So the first thing you need to do is buy your own hosting account and domain name. These are very cheap (i pay 5 or 6$ a month for the hosting and only 10$ a year for the domain) I use godaddy as my hosting and domain provider and since i bought both items through them at the same time i got great discounts. Some other great alternatives are hostgator.com, bluehost.com and hostazar.com.

When you pick your domain name you want it to be something that is “branding”. For me it was quite simple, since i don’t have a company or idea to brand, i decided to brand myself. Thus MattAdamo.Net was born. If you plan on making your blog something you are going to stay with for a long time i highly suggest making it your name. If not, try making it something regarding the niche you are going into. Ex: Dogtrainingsecrets.com…

Always go for the .com extension first as google ranks these the highest. If those are not available than try the .net and .org. If those are not available than try any other extension you like. If you are going to be using your name as the domain name than a .me might not be a bad idea.

Here are some quick tips for smart domain buying

• If your domain name is taken try and use hyphens. Google doesn’t read these when they are picking up the search engine results. So for example instead of using makemoneyonline.com you could try make-money-online.com
• If you are making a niche blog website, target the exact keyword you are going for. For example if you are going into the make money online niche, a great blog name would be “how-to-make-money-with-youtube.com”
• If you can’t get your ideal domain, try adding words to the beginning and end of the domain such as “my” and “your”. For example you could make bloggingsecrets.com into Yourbloggingsecrets.com
• Make sure people can remember your domain name so that they can come back to it. Try making it two to three words and keep it simple. If you make your domain name is “themostamazingdogtrainingsecretsintheworld.com” people might spell it wrong or not remember it all together

So now that your domain and hosting is all set up you need to have a website to host your blog on. For most people this would be an impossible task of learning html, javascript and all other wierd coding. However the great folks at wordpress have created a free platform that we can use to take all of that techno-jargon out of the equation. YAY!

But to make it even easier, most hosting websites have made it a 1 click wordpress installation. I know for a fact that godaddy and bluehost do anyways. Here is a great tutorial webpage showing you exacly how to do the one click hosting through godaddy.

Fabulous! now you should have your blog up and running. Now you need to pick a theme for your blog. Personally i reccomend the premium themes over at woothemes.com. Check those out there

Hey guys,

The other day I was watching family guy, and we all know who Peter Griffin is. Probably the funniest cartoon character that ever existed (or technically diddn’t haha).

Anyways, have you ever noticed how people can always remember the stupid stuff he says. I mean i could personally recite at least 5 of my favorite Peter Griffin quotes, and i have a few freinds that could do well over 50 (which is actually quite sad). And i mean go over to youtube and you will find an ENDLESS amount of just quick family guy clips (like the micheal moore farting one, or the peanut butter jelly one).

Anyways i was thinking about why people remember all these things (besides them being extremely funny) and it finally hit me when i was reading one of my copywriting books. All of the things he does is a type of story. And then when people tell these jokes they’re telling it in story form which makes it much easier to share.

Sharing your content in story form is actually a very valuable copywriting technique and provides some great benefits that straight up posting cant…..

You see, when you write something in a story form it does a few things for the reader.

• It instantly connects the reader to you by putting both of you on the same level (the most powerful copywriting technique there is).
• People love to share stories. Remember when you were in high school and something big happened; you always wanted to be the person to tell everyone what happened. It works exactly the same in the internet marketing world.
• Storys allow you to emotionally connect to the reader. You could very easily write an inspirational post, a fun post, a crazy post ect…. and in all these cases it will emotionally link the reader to you which means they will probably share it with other people.
• It is EXTREMELY easy to remember a story rather then just a straight up peice of content. ( In fact there are courses you can take where you can learn to remember VERY long patterns and sequences and they teach you to remember it by teaching it in a story type fashion)

Not only that but think of all the mindless crap (ohh sorry, i mean “content”) out there. Some people honestly don’t know what they’re talking about. To stand out from the crowd it is an amazing idea to write a story that other people can relate to.

So now that you know how to write rediculous, emotionally grabbing content, how do you actually make it do viral?

Well social media is how you do it….

As you can see, at the top of this post you will see a retweet button. At this current time, Twitter is THE MOST powerful way to spread your message virally. Could you imagine if you got 10 retweets to people who all have lists of over 5,000 people. Yea, thats the kind of reach that social media has. (If you use wordpress, you’re going to want to use the tweetmeme pluggin)

Secondly your going to want a way to let people social bookmark your content. I personally use the “bookmarking is sexy” pluggin from wordpress and it works great. Social bookmarking can also spread quickly and gives you AMAZING search engine rankings.

Lastly your going to want to use any type of social networking website. Send a quick status update and i promise if your content is good it will spread. fast. (a social networking site is facebook, myspace, linkedin, ect.)

Anyways, yesterday i got an email from a friend and he showed me this video by Tony Robbins, Frank Kern, and John Reese. For those of you that don’t know, these are three of THE BIGGEST names in the industry. (in fact John Reese did a 1 million dollar day in a recent launch)

Well the video talked about why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. And everything boil’s down to mindset. Now you’re probably wondering how it actually works, well i’ll give you some examples and then i’ll send you a link to the video so you can get a more in depth analysis of it. Do you know who Sir Roger Banister is? He is the first man to every break 4 minuets in the mile. Before him in HISTORY no one had ever done it. Every scientist said it was physically impossible, not doable by the human body. But Banister knew that if he could do it in his head then he could do it in real life. So every single day he would visualize his race and in his head he broke it hundreds of times.

Then one cool spring day he stepped on the line and since his mind was already used to breaking 4 minuets his body was now ready to.

In the next 2 years 37 more people broke the 4 minuet mile. Do you really think it had anything to do with being physically not able to…. heck no! it had to to with not being mentally able to.

And the best part is, you can train your mind to do anything, and honestly it will take you anywhere. You need to honestly believe that you can, and you need to want it. After that everything else will fall into place. I don’t really do a great job of explaining it but this video is honestly amazing!

Hey guys, to all of my american blog followers i want to wish you a happy thanksgiving!

And it’s a tradition in my family to say what you’re thankful for. So i’ll start

I’m thankful for my wonderful family who i love dearly. I’m thankful for my amazing girlfriend caitlin, and all of my friends.

I’m also thankful for all of the opportunities my parents are able to give to me that i know so many others don’t have.
